On August 29, 2025, Family, the highly-anticipated new album from Aba Diop & the Yermande Family, arrives as both a celebration and a revelation.
The album’s second single, “Yarou” (“Respect”), opens with a simple, powerful gesture: the voice of Diop’s three-year-old son, Ahmed Diop, calling listeners to attention. “Why did I have my son sing first? Because I want him to understand the importance of being respectful in this world,” says Diop.
Legendary keyboardist John Medeski, who appears throughout Family, contributes his unmistakable musical voice on “Yarou”. “I love how percussion forward it is,” Medeski says. “I really think it’s unlike anything out there. It has the song forms and arrangements of more pop stuff but the raw power and sound of traditional music.”
Yarou is available now on all major streaming platforms. Family will be released worldwide on August 29, 2025.

The album’s first single, “Aba Ñew Na!” (“Aba Is Here!”), sets the tone: an ebullient, high-energy track that announces Diop’s arrival with polyrhythmic fire and joyful call-and-response.
Driven by Diop’s hand-carved sabar drums and recorded between Dakar and upstate New York, Family is a boundary-crossing, spirit-forward celebration of tradition, community, and musical healing. Produced by Senegalese studio legend Lamp and recorded in part by Grammy-winning engineer Danny Blume, the album features pristine sonic craftsmanship that retains the raw energy of live griot improvisation.
